Lasers in limbo amid World TeamTennis inaction

Posted online

Springfield Lasers officials say the team is in a state of limbo about the upcoming season amid uncertainty from the World TeamTennis league.

The team posted on its Facebook page July 1 that the WTT currently has not scheduled play for the 2022 season.

"Unfortunately, Springfield will not see the return of the Lasers this month," the post reads. "While World TeamTennis has made no official announcement, there is currently no 2022 season scheduled for Springfield or the other teams in the WTT league."

Springfield-Greene County Park Board Public Information Administrator Jenny Filmer Edwards on Friday said no further information is available other than what was made public in the Facebook post. The Lasers are managed by the Park Board, with ownership represented by Parks Director Bob Belote and John Cooper, according to its website.

"The Springfield Lasers and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board appreciate the outpouring of interest and support for our hometown team, winners of the WTT Championship in 2018 and 2019, and runners-up in the 2021 season, played last November in Indian Wells, California," the post reads. "It is our sincerest hope to bring Lasers tennis back to Cooper Tennis Complex in the summer of 2023."

An official with WTT could not be reached for comment by deadline. The league has not posted a press release on its website since November 2021, and its Facebook page also has not been active since December last year.

For its most recent WTT championship win, the Lasers defeated the New York Empire in summer 2019, according to past reporting.
