Johnny Morris plans resort in Florida Keys

Posted online

Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris is developing a 175-acre resort in the Florida Keys.

Morris was joined late last month by Florida government officials, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, for the Valhalla Island Resort announcement, according to a news release.

"One thing we're excited about is being a part of this community," Morris said at last month's news conference, which was captured on video by news outlet WFLA.com. "This project is something that has a lot to do with passion. We've owned part of this island going back over 30 years."

The Valhalla Island Resort, which is slated for completion within two years, is designed with one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom cottages, a master lodge, general store, spa, fishing marina, restaurants, swimming pools and spaces for people to connect with nature, according to the release. A large focus is on fishing, paying tribute to the sport's history in the Florida Keys.

An estimated investment in the development plan was not disclosed in the release, and officials could not be reached for comment by deadline. Also planned are renovations of nearby Morris-owned hotel properties beyond the resort's footprint to become apartment buildings for workforce housing. The resort's plans additionally call for maintaining more than 50% of the property's green space.

Morris and his daughter, Megan Stack, are working together on the project and have partnered with architecture firms Hart Howerton and Nunzio Marc DeSantis Architects to bring the 110-unit nature resort to life, according to the release.
