Healthy drinks shop coming to Walnut Street

A downtown space that’s sat vacant on Walnut Street since 2018 has gained a new tenant.

Situated between the MudLounge bar and BookMarx bookstore, Downtown Nutrition Club LLC, a healthy drinks shop, is targeted to open next month at 323 E. Walnut St., said co-owner Morgan Helms.

Helms said she would be running the three-employee store in the 1,900-square-foot space formerly occupied by clothing retailer Envy Boutique. The retailer shuttered in 2018.

“That was kind of our target area,” Helms said of downtown. “It just happened to be a really good spot.”

Helms, who co-owns the venture with husband Colby Helms and friend Bridgette Cummings, said they signed a three-year lease with Springfield Lofts for an undisclosed rate. She estimates startup costs will be at $20,000.

It was a conversation last fall with Cummings that spurred a decision to launch the downtown business, Helms said. Cummings also owns The Healthy Edge Nutrition Club at 3604 S. Campbell Ave.

Downtown Nutrition Club is modeled off of The Healthy Edge, Helms said, but will have a smaller drink menu than the Campbell Avenue shop. It will focus entirely on nutrition shakes and energy teas.

“We wanted to go with that theme downtown,” she said, noting the majority of the shakes will be under 250 calories, with low sugar and low carbohydrate counts, while the teas will be sugar- and carb-free.

The menu will feature around 20 shakes in such flavors as chunky monkey, Snickers and butter pecan. Cherry limeade and strawberry lemonade will be among the 15 teas to be served.

Despite its name, Helms said there is no club for visitors to join. She added shakes will generally run $7, with teas to cost around $5.
