Greene County collector warns of tax scam

Posted online

The Greene County collector's office is warning residents to be on alert for a tax scam.

Residents have received documents via mail that look similar to a Greene County tax receipt or a state tax paper. However, the scam is an attempt to obtain older adults' names, phone numbers, addresses and ages to then sell the information, according to a news release.

"It is a noted scam in most states," officials said in the release. "The collector’s office will never collect personal information such as birthdates, Social Security numbers, income information, marital or income status, etc."

Update forms from the collector's office are located on the back of yearly tax statements.
