Mers Goodwill is planning a fall launch for a center in Springfield that would help adults earn their high school diplomas.
Dubbed the Goodwill Excel Center, the program that’s free to participants is scheduled to open Oct. 22 at 1514 S. Glenstone Ave., within the Glen Isle Center, according to a news release.
Mers Goodwill hired Joseph Cole as director of the center. Cole has past experience in public education, including work as a classroom teacher, as well as a sales and corporate management background.
“We are excited to have Joseph on board as we get set to open the Springfield Goodwill Excel Center in just a few short months,” said David Kutchback, president and CEO of Mers Goodwill, in the release. “The school will assist adults over the age of 21 to earn high school degrees. A core piece of the program is to help individuals to gain workplace certifications that allow for higher wages and greater career opportunities.”
Mers Goodwill also plans to open Excel Centers in Poplar Bluff and St. Louis this October, followed by a location in Columbia next year.
Officials with the organization estimate 500,000 people in Missouri over the age of 21 do not have their high school diploma, according to the release.
The Republic School District is on track to open its Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth-grade students for the 2025-26 academic year.

We are very fortunate that Mers chose Springfield as the community to begin this free program. So many of the young people I have met are hamstrung by the current cost of the GED classes and testing. A bucket of blessings to Mers Goodwill.
