Evangel consolidation approved

Posted online
The North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission has approved the application to consolidate Central Bible College, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary and Evangel University.

The Assemblies of God General Council voted in August 2011 to merge Evangel, CBC and AGTS into one entity known as Evangel University.

The consolidation approval follows a March announcement that the Evangel, CBC and AGTS Transitional Board of Trustees selected its first female president to lead the university should consolidation be approved. The board named Carol Taylor, president of Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, Calif., president-elect and CEO of the consolidated Evangel University, beginning in July.

After 40 years as president of Evangel, Robert Spence plans to retire in the spring semester of 2014, at which time he will be succeeded by Taylor.

“Vanguard is a different university today than it was when President Taylor stepped up to lead it,” said David Oddo, chairman of the board of trustees at Vanguard, in a separate release. “Under her direction, Vanguard University has been transformed from a school in financial crisis and declining enrollment into an institution poised to exit its state of financial exigency and with record enrollments.”

The consolidation of the Assemblies of God schools, made possible by a $5 million donation from the David Green family, owners of Hobby Lobby, was sought amid a challenged financial and enrollment landscape.

AGTS, already located on the Evangel campus, will have oversight of the School of Theology and Church Ministries within the university beginning in the fall, including all undergraduate and graduate classes, according to the Evangel release. Other schools to be phased in as part of the consolidation are the schools of arts and sciences; behavioral science; business and communications; and fine arts.

The full implementation of the consolidation is expected to be finished by 2020.

“Now our real work begins,” said George Wood, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God and chairman of the Transitional Board of Trustees, in the release. “As we consolidate the student bodies, there will need to be much thought and effort given to developing the structure of the university.”

An alumna of both Evangel University and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Taylor also took classes at CBC, according to the release. Taylor, who earned a doctorate from Florida State University, received the Orange County Business Journal Women in Business Award in 2011 and was recognized two years in a row as one of top 20 professional women to watch in Orange County.[[In-content Ad]]
