EGS Inspiration Hour on Workforce, Economic Development: Personas Exercise

Participants at Springfield Business Journal's Economic Growth Series Inspiration Hour on Workforce and Economic Development were asked to consider personas of potential workers to grow the local talent pipeline. Participants during the Aug. 23 event were asked, "What can businesses do to keep this worker in the region? What data and/or collaboration would be helpful in these efforts?" Highlights of participants' responses are below.

Dr. Fatima Amir
Doctor considering move to Springfield
• Promote LiveinSpringfieldMo.com
• Specific medical talent attraction video
• Feature diversity of area and local testimonials
• Highlight multicultural events in the area
• Highlight choice of public and private schools, as well as the GO CAPS program
• Outdoor activities are a draw. For example, greenways, lakes, rivers and trails
• Show collaboration within the faith community
• Feature the huge medical community with varied opportunities
• Clinical campus of University of Missouri is a highlight
• Broadband and good connectivity for remote work

Haven Hostetler
Recent graduate considering where to start career
• Invite them to functions so they can experience the community, rather than always sitting in the office
• Encourage them to be active in the community
• Explore flexibility, such as unlimited paid-time off and the ability to set certain hours
• Promote cost-of-living advantages of Springfield area
• Promote an understanding of the company culture
• This worker wants personal accountability
• Encourage better connections with colleagues
• Recommend cool/exciting things to do, such as the outdoors, farmers’ markets and festivals
• Promote urban living opportunities
• Technology available, such as good broadband

Emily Jones
Homemaker considering reentering workforce
• Needs/expects child care assistance
o Area should be cognizant of lack of child care facilities and be intentional about solving the problem to appeal to this type of worker
• Assess her current experience to find best fit
• Consider entrepreneurial endeavors
• Find connections via networking, career fairs, etc.
• Connect with resource support
• Affordability is king
• Remote work options are attractive

Rob Goodale
Banking executive considering move to Springfield
• Consider that he has a big family and wife whose needs also have to be met
• Sell the perks of the community
• Promote employers and perks offered
• Consider offering relocation costs and/or a retention bonus
• Promote volunteer opportunities
• Promote local sports culture and developments in that area
• Highlight regional opportunities, as well as the proximity to St. Louis and Kansas City
• Attractive compensation may attract this person
• Show off large restaurant scene
