The 10-year-old Starbucks store in the former Bistro Market downtown is closing.
Jan. 27 is the last day for the eight-employee store, said a worker at the coffee shop who declined to be identified. The date is the same as printed by the Springfield News-Leader, which was first to report on the closure.
The employee deferred questions to Pyramid Foods, which operates the Starbucks store and holds the lease on the 10,000-square-foot, first-floor space in the building, located at 401 South Ave., adjacent to the Walnut Street intersection. Pyramid Foods’ liquor and grocery store Bistro Market shuttered in mid-2017. It opened in 2010, along with the Starbucks store.
Officials with Pyramid Foods, the operator of Price Cutter, could not be reached for comment by deadline.
Building owner Morris Dock said Pyramid Foods is choosing not to renew its lease when it’s up on March 31.
Dock said he’s fielded inquiries on the space, and a potential tenant would have to be a good fit for downtown.
“I’ve gotten a lot of interest in the building,” he said. “I’m working with a couple of potential tenants.”
Good Spirits Concepts LLC had planned a venture called Blackwell Hall in the space in 2018. However, plans fell through over “engineering and architectural issues doing our project in the building,” Good Spirits co-owner Jim Wilson told Springfield Business Journal in September 2018.
Utah-based gourmet cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opened its first Springfield shop; interior design business Branson Upstaging LLC relocated; and Lauren Ashley Dance Center LLC added a second location.
