Donor pledges $50K in matching funds to The Kitchen

Posted online

After a fire damaged The Kitchen Inc.’s receiving and distributing center last month, a donor has stepped up with a matching donation pledge.

The donor, who is choosing to remain anonymous, is pledging to match the first $50,000 donated to The Kitchen during December, according to a news release.

Stefanie Nentrup, the nonprofit’s community development coordinator, said the pledge is unrestricted, meaning the funding can be used for all of The Kitchen’s programs that benefit homeless people in Springfield.

The Nov. 2 fire at 420 E. Blaine St., just off Commercial Street, caused nearly $100,000 in damages. The cause was ruled as arson, Springfield Business Journal previously reported.

Nentrup said The Kitchen is building a new warehouse inside one of the buildings at its O’Reilly Family Campus. Officials broke ground on The Kitchen’s new headquarters, at the Glenstone Avenue and Chestnut Expressway intersection, in mid-2017, according to SBJ archives. The Kitchen is relocating from C-Street.

Nentrup said The Kitchen’s new headquarters should be complete in June 2020.
