CU ranks among lowest costs for utilities

City Utilities of Springfield ranked well on an annual survey of the lowest rates nationwide conducted by Lincoln Electric System.

Out of 100 participating utilities nationwide, CU ranked No. 9 overall, up from its No. 12 placement in 2018. No. 1 is Boise, Idaho. The survey shows data compiled from municipal and investor-owned electric utilities.

CU also placed No. 3 in the category representing the lowest bills for residents using an average 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month. Those residents pay around $90.86 per month, which is down roughly 5% from the previous survey. CU was beaten by Detroit, which has an average monthly bill of $87.60.

In the category for residents using 500 kWh per month, Springfield ranked No. 6, with an average bill of $51.35. No. 1 is Spokane, Washington, with an average monthly bill of $47.54.
