CoxHealth President and CEO Steve Edwards was honored this week for his leadership by the Missouri Hospital Association.

Edwards, the health care system's CEO for the past decade, received the 2021 Visionary Leadership Award during the MHA's 99th annual convention, according to a news release.

"Steve is a deeply principled person. His true north will always be what is in the best interest of the communities CoxHealth serves," MHA President and CEO Jon Doolittle said in the release. "Throughout the pandemic, Steve made countless difficult decisions. When the delta variant spread rapidly through southwest Missouri, he led the charge to create or recreate capacity for patients, educate the public about protections and encourage vaccination as a tool to protect individuals and the community."

Doolittle added that he personally used best practices from Edwards when he was CEO of a Mosaic Medical Center in Missouri before joining the MHA.

The Visionary Leadership Award honors hospital or health system executives whose organizations have demonstrated sustained improvements in clinical and health outcomes.

Edwards in 2020 received the Humanitarian Award from Community Foundation of the Ozarks Inc. and the Association of Fundraising Professionals-Ozarks Region Chapter for his work during the pandemic.

CoxHealth, which has approximately 12,500 employees companywide, served 337,500 patients in fiscal 2020, according to the organization's Health Care Champions profile in Springfield Business Journal’s Nov. 8 print edition.
