Cox College chosen for $1.9M grant

Cox College was awarded a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding is earmarked for the CoxHealth-affiliated college to renovate and expand its simulation lab, according to a news release. The CoxHealth Foundation secured the grant.

The latest expansion plans come after Cox College wrapped up $6.6 million in renovations to all floors of Cox North Hospital early this year. Work included new student gathering spaces and expanding classrooms.

"The number of nursing students in our programs has greatly increased in recent months, following our expansion, which was partially funded by a separate EDA grant and local donors," said Amy DeMelo, president of Cox College, in the release. "We look forward to what this new equipment offers to our students during their training.”

The new project calls on the 1423 N. Jefferson Ave. college's simulation lab to be expanded into nine rooms, three control centers and five debriefing rooms. It would accommodate more students at the college, which last year was approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing to increase its capacity to 400 students from 250.

The EDA grant is slated to be matched locally with $470,480 in funds and result in 1,303 jobs created, according to the release.

“By expanding the simulation lab, we are adding another layer of training and expertise for our students," CoxHealth Foundation President Lisa Alexander said in the release. "This will help them be even more prepared to hit the ground running upon graduation to care for our community. It will also help add more good-paying jobs to the region.”
