Civil Kitchen building fire causes water damage

Posted online

An electrical fire this morning at Civil Kitchen caused sprinklers to deploy throughout the downtown building.

Springfield Fire Department Chief David Pennington said firefighters were dispatched around 6:27 a.m. after an electrical fire on the roof breached the third floor of the 107 Park Central Square building. Fire damage was minimal, he said, but the accident triggered the building’s sprinkler system.

“As far as Civil Kitchen goes, it’s water damage,” Pennington said. “There’s a little bit of smoke smell there.”

In a Facebook post this morning, Civil Kitchen officials said the restaurant will be closed today as a result of the fire. Springfield Business Journal’s call to co-owner Anne Baker was not returned by deadline.

“We are so thankful that everyone is safe and are so grateful to the brave, hard-working and kind firefighters and officers that continue to work so hard,” the post reads. “We will continue to update everyone as we learn more news.”

Pennington said firefighters were able to contain the fire within 20 minutes of arriving and then worked to shut off the sprinkler system.

“What we’re trying to do is to limit the fire but also minimize the damage from the water,” he said. “The challenge is it’s a very old building, so there’s a lot of concealed spaces.”

Multiple fire crews were packing up their gear just before 10 a.m. A portion of the square that was closed to traffic opened back up around 10:30 a.m.

Civil Kitchen opened in October 2015 at the former home of Trolley’s Park Central Pub.
