Carson-Mitchell wins SPS bid for Sunshine Elementary

The Springfield Public Schools Board of Education this week voted to award an elementary school project to Carson-Mitchell Inc., which submitted the lowest bid of $11.1 million.

The bid is less than the $11.6 million original cost estimate for a renovation and expansion of Sunshine Elementary School, according to a news release. The project calls on new classrooms, a storm-shelter gym and secure entrances scheduled for completion in August 2020.

When finished, Sunshine Elementary — located at the intersection of Sunshine Street and Jefferson Avenue — would have room for up to 350 students.

Carson-Mitchell beat four other contractors that submitted bids for the Sunshine project, said SPS spokeswoman Teresa Bledsoe. They are:
• DeWitt & Associates Inc., $11.3 million;
• Branco Enterprises Inc., $11.4 million;
• Killian Construction Co., $11.76 million; and
• Larry Snyder and Co., $11.8 million.

The Sunshine project bid is the latest work in the voter-approved, $168 million bond issuance called Proposition S. Earlier this month, the SPS board awarded Crossland Construction Co. Inc. a $15.4 million construction job for the Delaware Elementary School, and officials broke ground on DeWitt & Associates’ $9.3 million Southwest Region Early Childhood Center project.
