The St. Louis Cardinals announced the expansion of a $1 million employee relief fund to its Double-A affiliate in Springfield.
Seasonal and game-day employees at Hammons Field can apply for a one-time grant of $450 through the Cardinals Care Relief Fund that was created in April, according to a news release. The fund is designed to help employees who have been impacted financially due to the closures of Busch Stadium in St. Louis and Hammons Field in Springfield. The COVID-19 crisis has forced the closures and put a delay on baseball’s return.
"It is need-based, so there is no telling how many employees will elect to apply," Springfield Cardinals General Manager Dan Reiter said via email this morning. "All eligible game-day and seasonal employees may apply and we do not expect any to be turned away, unless they do not meet the three criteria through the application."
Reiter said more than 300 people locally are eligible. If all 300 workers received the $450 grant, that would total $135,000 through the Cardinals fund.
The criteria, according to the Cardinals' website, requires grant recipients to be seasonal or game-day employees of the Springfield team or any of its contractors or vendors; to have either performed or expected to perform work or services at Hammons Field during the 2020 season; and to have experienced financial hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Cardinals' website has not yet listed a restart date for season play.
The Republic School District is on track to open its Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth-grade students for the 2025-26 academic year.
