Big Fat Burritos to close at month’s end

Posted online

South-side restaurant Big Fat Burritos is closing after 20 years in operation.

Manager Kim Snell said the target closure date is Oct. 31, should its food supplies last. She said the restaurant will continue to make orders this week via SGC Foodservice.

“That’s kind of been happening the past couple days,” she said of food shortages as customers flock in to say goodbye to the restaurant.

Big Fat Burritos announced the planned closure in an Oct. 17 Facebook post.

“Well, after 20 years, we are done. We have succeeded in our goal of feeding 600,000 people,” the post reads. “This October will be the last month we will be open, so tell your friends to come join us for the last call. We have loved serving all of you!”

Owner Jason Childress, who was unavailable for comment this morning, is moving on to a new venture at the start of 2019, Snell said, though she was unsure of the type of business.

“Jason’s always had other business stuff going on. He’s in real estate right now — they’re developing subdivisions,” she said.

As to Big Fat Burritos, Snell said the closure would allow Childress and his employees to take a break.

“It’s a lot of work and we’ve just been burnt out for a while,” said Snell, an employee at Big Fat Burritos for 16 years. “There’s a lot of loyal customers. We’ve seen the same people for over 10 years a couple times a week — same food, same order, same everything.”

Big Fat Burritos operates at 3354 S. National Ave. in the Medical Mile Plaza at the intersection with Walnut Lawn Street.
