Alamo again closes after 2-month run

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's Springfield theater has closed indefinitely for the second time this year.

John Martin, co-owner of the Alamo Drafthouse Springfield franchise, cited a lack of new film releases in a post yesterday on the theater's Facebook page.

"This is a terribly difficult and disappointing decision, but we’re hopeful that by pausing now, we’ll be able to reopen once a steady stream of new releases resumes," Martin said in the post.

A projected reopening date was not provided by Martin, who said the temporary closure was effective immediately.

The 4005 South Ave. theater reopened in August after a five-month closure brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Regal Theatres, which also reopened its Springfield cinema in August, announced earlier this month that all of its theaters would close at the end of business Oct. 8 “until further notice … in response to an increasingly challenging theatrical landscape and sustained key market closures.”

Alamo Drafthouse in March submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notification to the state of Missouri indicating 199 employees were temporarily laid off at the theater, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting. It's unclear how many people were brought on for the reopening in August and if furloughs are being conducted starting this month. Officials with the theater could not be reached for comment by deadline.

Alamo Drafthouse Springfield opened in June 2017 at the former Campbell 16 Cine, which closed in mid-2016. The theater is known for its restaurant-quality food and drinks that can be ordered from your seat mid-film, as well as a no-tolerance cellphone policy, an interior themed after "2001: A Space Odyssey" and other features.
