Even as companies explore artificial intelligence and other digital tools, one thing they are discovering is that they can’t automate worker satisfaction. That takes support, guidance, awareness and appreciation.
In short, says Karen Carcamo, it takes the human in human resources to create an employee-centered workplace culture.
“I believe the human side of HR is more critical than ever,” says Carcamo, who joined Gold Mechanical Inc. in August 2022 and serves as its HR director. “No amount of automation or digital tools can replace the value of genuine relationships, mentorship and human connection in the workplace. Employees don’t stay with a company because of an app or a process; they stay because they feel seen, supported and part of something bigger.”
That is especially important in the construction business, says Carcamo. It is a challenge hiring and retaining skilled tradespeople in an industry with a shrinking labor pool, so it is rewarding when she can help young people see the industry as one that offers opportunities for financial stability, growth and advancement.
“I strive to ensure that Gold Mechanical is a company where employees don’t just have a job but a career that truly makes a difference in their lives,” says Carcamo.
In the past year, Gold Mechanical has introduced several initiatives focused on employee retention and success:
Under Carcamo’s guidance, Gold Mechanical has experienced significant growth, says CEO Ron Bogart.
“When she started, we had 128 employees; through her innovative recruiting strategies and steadfast focus on employee retention, our workforce grew to 160 in 2023 and further expanded to 180 in 2024,” Bogart says. “This remarkable increase is a testament to her ability to identify and nurture quality talent, ensuring that we maintain a robust and highly skilled team even in the face of industry-wide shortages.”
That’s a 40% increase in the workforce over two years.
“I am a firm believer that when we take care of our people, they will take care of everything else,” says Carcamo. “We don’t just build projects – we build careers, families, and futures. The craftsmen who show up every day to do the work are the heart of our company, and we will always ensure they come first.”
Outside of the office, Carcamo, who speaks Spanish, has volunteered for MANA Worldwide stationed in Chile, Springfield Public Schools and United Way.
