Achieving Victory After Financial Crisis

Posted online

This time last year Victory Mission was in trouble. Executive Director Jason Hynson assumed the helm right in the middle of a financial crisis. “Accounts payable were high and cash was zero,” he says. “We spent last year making huge cuts and working on the budget.”

As a result of going over the books with a fine-toothed comb, Victory saved nearly $600,000 in expenditures over the previous year. There was some staff reduction but most of the savings came from cutting other expenses, including the trade school.

“Instead of being the ones to offer the training, we’ve decided to partner with people in the community who already do these things well,” says Hynson. “This allows us to be more intentional with our focus. We are building a bridge from homelessness to the workplace. A man on the street with a sign may desire work but without an address, clean clothes, steady transportation, and/or soft skills, he probably isn’t ready to perform to his best. We want to help set people up for success”.

Mid-Missouri bank has partnered with Victory to facilitate progress and change, helping find solutions to reduce expenses without charging a fee. “They really believe in what we’re doing in the community,” says Hynson.

After all the changes that have taken place, Victory Mission is now operating in the black.

“There’s so much competition among non-profits,” says Hynson. “There’s only so much money in a town and even if they wanted to, everyone can’t give to everything. We’ve decided to start thinking like a business and being more strategic in the way we do things so we can continue serving those in need to the best of our abilities.”
