US slaps sanctions on Venezuela Supreme Court judges

Posted online
The United States has imposed sanctions on Venezuela's chief judge and seven other members of the country's Supreme Court.

The move is said to be retribution for taking over power from the opposition-led congress earlier this year.

Through the order, the judges will have their assets within U.S. jurisdiction frozen, and U.S. citizens will be prohibited from doing business with them.

"By imposing these targeted sanctions, the United States is supporting the Venezuelan people in their efforts to protect and advance democratic governance in their country," said U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
