University of Texas removing Confederate statues from campus

Posted online

Students will no longer see Confederate statues when they return to University of Texas on Aug. 30.

School President Greg Fenves said in a statement yesterday "that Confederate monuments have become symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism."

The statues coming down depict Gens. Robert E. Lee and Albert Sidney Johnston, Confederate Postmaster General John Reagan and former Texas Gov. James Stephen Hogg.

The Lee, Reagan and Johnston statues will be added to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History. The Hogg statue will be considered for another place on campus that isn't its Main Mall.
