A 3-month-old killer whale calf died at Sea World June 24 taking the theme park’s death toll to 22 whales.
The Washington Post reports, the calf, Kyara, who was born to mother Takara in April, came down with “very serious and progressive health issues” over the past week, according to Sea World.
Sea World ended its captive breeding program last March, seeking to retool its image following public outcry when a 5-ton male orca, Tilikum, killed a trainer in front of park visitors. The documentary “Blackfish” also prompted public backlash.
The park also has experience decreased ticket sales in recent years, and according to the Post, Sea World is phasing out its killer whale performances.
Although Kyara’s ailment was likely pneumonia, an official cause of death may not be available for several weeks.
