Planet Fitness franchisee opening north-side club

The franchisee behind two Springfield Planet Fitness clubs is opening a third — this one in north Springfield.

Ken Horn, spokesman for franchisee PF Arkansas LLC, said the 2633 N. Kansas Expressway club in Super Center Plaza is targeting a mid-December opening.

Horn said customers have been asking for a north-side location to complement its clubs in central Springfield, at 1730 S. Campbell Ave., and south Springfield, at 2851 W. Republic Road.

“It was logical to fill in that gap,” he said. “It’s an attractive area for us.”

At Super Center Plaza, Planet Fitness joins a slate of tenants that include Buffalo Wild Wings, GameStop and Sprint.

Horn said PF Arkansas — run by Rick and David Kueber, who also are the franchisors for Sun Tan City — next week is slated to open its 50th Planet Fitness. Located in Rolla, the club will be PF Arkansas’s fourth in Missouri, he said, noting the Planet Fitness franchisee also operates in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. He said Planet Fitness (NYSE: PLNT) as a whole has some 1,600 locations.

Planet Fitness last year reached 10 million members, the company announced. Horn declined to disclose PF Arkansas’s membership numbers in Springfield.

At the north-side Super Center Plaza, PF Arkansas leases 14,700 square feet for an undisclosed rate from owner Jared Enterprises. Online listings show Fashion Bug previously operated out of the same address.

PF Arkansas brought Planet Fitness to Springfield in 2014 on Republic Road, followed by the Campbell Avenue location the next year, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
