Pitbull Powersports buys former Surplus City

Nearly five years after opening in Springfield, Pitbull Powersports plans to relocate to the former Surplus City property it purchased in September.

Owner Lynn Damouth is investing an undisclosed amount renovating the roughly 13,500-square-foot retail building and a warehouse with 5,000 square feet at 3114 W. Sunshine St.

Damouth is targeting a Jan. 2 move from 6,000 square feet at 1332 N. Glenstone Ave., where the retailer of recreational vehicles opened in March 2013 at a former Movie Gallery. The move to the shuttered Surplus City was first reported by KY3.

Damouth declined to disclose the purchase price from the Robert L. Appleby Trust. A report issued yesterday from commercial real estate tracker Xceligent listed the sale price at $1.3 million. Lee McLean III of SVN Rankin Co. represented the sellers, the Appleby family, who closed Surplus City last year after 54 years in operation.

“We got a good buy on the property, and the west side of Springfield is growing up. There’s no room on the other side,” Damouth said, noting the company leases its current store location. “The building that we’re in now is too tiny and the parking lot is too tiny.”

Renovation work is underway, including raising the ceiling height by 10 feet, redoing the parking lot and putting up new exterior frontage. Damouth plans to hire three to five new employees with the move.

Pitbull Powersports five weeks ago opened its second store in Bolivar, and the company also is planning an off-road park called The Rock at a quarry north of the city. At the park, customers will be able to test Pitbull Powersports merchandise, such as all-terrain vehicles. Between its two stores, Pitbull Powersports currently employs 20, Damouth said.
