Yellow Chair Makery
Mother and daughter fine artists Kathie Ryan-Garcia and Maggie Kaira started Yellow Chair Makery on Dec. 2 downtown at 314 E. McDaniel St. In 1,100 square feet, Yellow Chair Makery holds classes on sewing, weaving, fashion design drawing and basic painting, said Ryan-Garcia, who charges $10 an hour for teaching fees. A sewing class, for instance, is $25, including project supplies. Ryan-Garcia has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Missouri State University, and she operates J&K Home Innovations with her husband. She and her daughter, who has a bachelor’s in fashion design also from MSU, previously worked for the Head Start program at Ozarks Area Community Action Corp. They’ll also hold wine and paint nights, rent the space to makers to hold their own classes and sell supplies for sewing and felting. “There’s a big makery movement. They have stores like this in London and Paris,” Ryan-Garcia said. “It’s a little new for Springfield.”

Randy’s Donuts
Randy Gallaway added his third doughnut shop in the area, and the latest has his name on it. “It’s more personal,” he said of Randy’s Donuts’ March 7 opening at 1500 E. Sunshine St., Ste. 100. For seven years, Gallaway has operated a Daylight Donuts store and another known as Today’s Donuts in Nixa. The three stores buy product from the Daylight Donut Flour Co., he said, and he plans to change the name to Randy’s on all three. Randy’s Donuts is his largest investment to date, spending over $100,000 to open, and Gallaway signed a five-year lease for an undisclosed rate. With 12 employees, Randy’s Donuts sells traditional, glazed and fancy doughnuts, as well as cinnamon rolls, kolaches, and biscuits and gravy. The shop is in the newly renovated former Barker-Phillips-Jackson building and includes a drive-thru. Gallaway said his stores usually make 200-400 pounds of dough a day.
