Select Homes-Team Real Estate
Wichita, Kansas-based Select Homes-Team Real Estate entered the Springfield market with a Jan. 1 opening at 1309 E. Republic Road. The office is the real estate company’s sixth. Springfield team leader David Johnson said startup costs were $100,000 and Select Homes signed a three-year lease with Gary Elmer for $3,500 per month. Last year, Johnson worked as an independent agent through Coldwell Banker and brought three agents with him to Select Homes. He hired seven additional agents for the Springfield office. Johnson said Select Homes emphasizes a team-based approach where employees are assigned to each step in the selling process, and all real estate agents work full-time. The company also has in-house marketing and advertising, as well as agent training. Select Homes, which employs over 50 agents companywide, plans to open offices in Joplin and Branson within two years.

Cellar and Plate LLC
Self-described communal wine bar Cellar and Plate LLC opened Dec. 16 at 2916 S. Lone Pine Ave. in space formerly occupied by Bambino’s Coffee and Smoothie Cafe. “It’s a wine bar that serves food,” said owner Mary Guccione, a Level 2 certified sommelier. Her interest in wine started about four years ago. “And the best way to learn is to immerse myself in it,” she said. Guccione’s background is in marketing, and she’s currently a client marketing strategist for Roll Forward, a local shopping incentive program. Her family also was behind Sorella’s Table, which a couple of years ago offered a reservation-only slow-dining experience on select weekend evenings. Startup costs for Cellar and Plate were $20,000, she said, and the establishment sells domestic and international wines, ranging from $7 per glass to $75 per bottle. The current best seller is a carmenere from Chile. Cellar and Plate also dishes up tapas, including Spanish meatballs, shrimp paella and romesco beef, as well as nuts, olives and cheese platters.

Missouri Onsite Testing LLC
After nearly 10 years in the waste removal business, Richard Brownsberger sold Hometown Disposal Inc. and launched Missouri Onsite Testing LLC. The transition took place Dec. 1, when WCA Waste Corp. closed on the purchase and Brownsberger opened his business for drug and alcohol testing at 2032 E. Kearney St., Ste. 109. Missouri Onsite Testing specializes in mobile screenings for employers and individuals, including for Department of Transportation compliance. With three staff members and over 30 clients, other services are DNA, immigration and paternity/maternity tests. Brownsberger spent $10,000 in software and equipment purchases, such as breathalyzers, to start the business. He said DOT drug screening services average $60 per test.
