Menard Inc.
Making its first appearance in the Queen City, Eau Claire, Wisconsin-based home improvement retailer Menard Inc. arrived to town with two locations opened simultaneously Aug. 21. With more than 300 stores operating nationally, Menards set up shop at 500 N. Eastgate Ave. and 3803 W. University St. Both stores took less than a year to be constructed. The estimated construction cost for the nearly 247,000-square-foot University Street location was $6.5 million, according to a city building permit, with Rich Kramer Construction Inc. as the general contractor. According to another city permit, the Eastgate store had an estimated $6.7 million cost with a 200,000-square-foot store and 48,000-square-foot warehouse. For that store, the retailer purchased land in 2015 for $4 million from Springfield Public Schools. Menards carries a full line of home improvement products, name-brand appliances, groceries, pet products, and lawn and garden supplies.

Maes Gelateria
With two years under its belt downtown, Maes Gelateria opened a south-side shop Aug. 18 at 1332 E. Republic Road, Ste. E, in the River Plaza retail center. The business, which serves gelato, sorbet, dolce waffles and coffee, opened its first shop in 2016 at 334 E. Walnut St. Father-and-son owners Earl and Cameron Maes added a satellite location in January at 1932 S. Glenstone Ave. but closed it with the opening of the new site. “We’re wanting to get more customers from the south side of town, and that’s why we’re trying to direct our focus over there,” Cameron Maes said. Maes Gelateria took over the new space in mid-June, he said, replacing Brown Eyed Girls Gifts, a clothing and gift shop. Startup costs were between $30,000-$40,000, he said, with the shop on a three-year lease for an undisclosed rate with River Plaza retail center owner John Haik.
Hours: Noon-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon-6 p.m. Sunday

Meridian Title Co.
Jeremy and Emily Burcham purchased Meridian Title Co. on July 31 for undisclosed terms from Randy Doennig and Stephen Adams. The company is operating via Jeremy Burcham’s Meridian Title LLC, and he said the business name and employees would remain. “It’s a little rare to find things like Meridian come up for sale, that’s right in your area of expertise right at the time you’re looking to do something like that,” said Burcham, a longtime mortgage industry executive. He most recently worked as president of The Compliance Group Inc., a San Diego-based company, although he and his wife have maintained their residence in Nixa. At 4121 S. Fremont Ave., Ste. 152, Meridian Title has a staff of seven, including the new owner-operators. Doennig agreed to help with the transition for up to a year. Burcham said he is aiming to grow the title search and closing functions of the full-service title insurance, closing and escrow office.
