Boulder, Colorado-based Lucky’s Market opened its first local natural foods store Jan. 9 in Glenstone Marketplace, 3333 S. Glenstone Ave. The Springfield store adds 150 staff members to the company’s 3,500 employees among 25 other stores, spokeswoman Krista Torvik said via email. Owned by Bo and Trish Sharon, Lucky’s already operates stores in Columbia and the St. Louis area. Brad Clark manages the Springfield store, moving in from leadership roles at several natural foods stores, including Whole Foods Market. Lucky’s stocks traditional groceries as well as organic, local and gluten-free items – plus an in-house bakery and butcher, Torvik said. Smoothies, juices, coffee, beer and wine also are available for customers to drink while shopping, she said. The new grocer – immediately north of Target – leases 28,000 square feet of Brad Thessing’s 100,000-square-foot, $10 million development. Lease terms were undisclosed. HomeGoods opened in the center in November, and Designer Shoe Warehouse is scheduled to open later this year.

4 by 4 Brewing Co. LLC
Four couples opened 4 by 4 Brewing Co. LLC on Dec. 22 at 2811 E. Galloway St., Ste. A, in Galloway Village. Chris Shaffer said he, Derek Shimeall, Justin Steenburgh and a fourth undisclosed partner are keeping their days jobs while running the brewery and tap house during nights and weekends. The small-batch operation makes nine beer varieties, 150 gallons at a time, said Shaffer, the head brewer. A New England-style India pale ale and Java The Kolsch are the most popular, he said, with glasses running $2-$5 and 64-ounce growlers filled for $14. The team borrowed an undisclosed sum through a U.S. Small Business Administration-backed loan from OakStar Bank, Shaffer said, and signed a multiyear lease for 1,500 square feet from landlord Jeff Haymes. Terms were undisclosed. Stinson Building Co. completed the infill on the space designed by nForm Architecture LLC. The partners had estimated $300,000 in startup costs.

Perspectives Preparatory Academy
Josh and Courtney Ungaro opened Perspectives Preparatory Academy on Aug. 16 at 1601 E. Republic Road, offering a tuition-free school inclusive to children of all income and developmental backgrounds. Josh is the parent of two children – one of whom has autism – and he also owns several businesses, including Allied Solution Group LLC and The Mid-West Transfer LLC, said Nacy Ryerson, the school’s dean. She said the Perspectives Preparatory model teaches its 24 elementary and middle school students at an individualized pace, not based on traditional grade levels. About 170 students are on a waiting list, Ryerson said, and the nonprofit’s board plans to add locations and high school curriculum within two years. Currently, half the students have federally qualifying disabilities, said Ryerson, a former Springfield Public Schools special education teacher. The 12-person staff includes Executive Director Courtney Ungaro, four teachers, three aids and a nurse.
