OakStar Bank signs on for East Sunshine development

Posted online

OakStar Bank is planning its second Springfield branch at a remodeled development on East Sunshine Street near Sam’s Club.

Through Raga Properties LLC, Baron Design & Associates principal Rita Baron earlier this year bought the former South Oaks Center at 3624 E. Sunshine St. There, she’s remodeling the retail center for existing tenants St. George’s Donuts and Lloyd’s Cleaners and adding 2,200 square feet for OakStar Bank. Buckingham’s BBQ restaurant will not return to the center, which is slated for completion in mid-July after the roughly $1.5 million project is complete, Baron said.

Baron said OakStar Bank is leasing the 2,200-square-foot portion on the west side of the building. OakStar CEO Randy Johnson could not be reached for comment by deadline.

At the 7,500-square-foot center now called Bedford Side Plaza, Baron said one bay is still available for lease.

Baron Design & Associates is the project architect on Bedford Side Plaza, with financing from OakStar Bank. Larry Snyder and Co. was hired as general contractor.

The new design features a mezzanine structure with floor-to-ceiling windows, Baron said, as well as architectural exterior paneling to create dimension and straight lines that are contrasted against a dark brick veneer.

For OakStar, the East Sunshine branch will be its 14th full-service location. It also operates a loan office in Joplin and a mortgage center in Kansas City, according to its website. The company recently expanded through the purchase of five-branch Lake of the Ozarks bank First National Bank.

OakStar last year ranked sixth on Springfield Business Journal’s list of the area’s largest banks and savings banks with $504 million in local deposits. OakStar’s 2017 revenue was $38.5 million for three-year revenue growth of 76 percent, according to SBJ reporting.
