NYC moves to raise cigarette costs to nation's highest

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio yesterday announced a series of proposed bills affecting the city's cigarette prices.

Under the package of bills, the city's cigarettes would rise to $13 per pack from $10.50. That would make New York home to the costliest cigarettes in the country.

"When it comes to New Yorkers' health, big tobacco is public enemy number one," the mayor said. "Today, we are taking a stand against these companies to not only reduce smoking and tobacco usage in New York City, but also save lives.”
