Nixon appoints 31st circuit associate judge

Posted online
Less than three years after taking the bench in Springfield Municipal Court, Judge Becky Borthwick is moving up.

Gov. Jay Nixon yesterday appointed her to associate circuit judge for the 31st Judicial Circuit, which covers Greene County.

Borthwick, who also is founding and presiding judge of the Springfield Homeless Court, was one of three applicants submitted to the governor for consideration by the 31st Circuit Judicial Commission under the Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan, according to a news release.

“From her work in private and public practice, as well as the municipal judiciary, Judge Borthwick brings valuable experience to the state court bench,” Nixon said in the release.

Prior to taking the municipal bench in 2013, Borthwick was a managing partner for the Springfield office of Franke Schultz & Mullen PC and worked as an assistant attorney general in the Missouri attorney general’s Springfield office.

Borthwick grew up in Cedar County and was the first in her family to attend college. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and a law degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

Borthwick’s municipal court term was set to expire June 30, 2017.

“The replacement of a municipal court judge follows the same application and selection process of replacing a full-time city employee. Judges are hired by the city manager’s office,” Springfield spokeswoman Cora Scott said via email.

More details on the selection process are expected to be released later today.
