Southwest Baptist University hired Tara Parson as controller, succeeding Rick Juhlin. Parson is a certified public accountant and has worked with BKD LLP, the university’s auditor, for six years.

Education
Missouri State University’s hospitality and restaurant administration department received the Missouri Tourism Council’s 2011 Educational Award.

Springfield Public Schools named Donna Aldrich principal of the Pleasant View K-8 and Garry Moore principal of Hillcrest High. Aldrich has worked as a teacher for 16 years and three years as a high school assistant principal. Most recently, she served SPS as coordinator of operations for secondary schools. Moore has 30 years of experience in education, most recently as a principal in Indiana and North Carolina.

The SPS Board of Education elected Tom Prater to a second term as president and Kris Callen as vice president.

The Kern Family Foundation Inc., of Waukesha, Wis., awarded a $115,000 grant to Assemblies of God Theological Seminary to fund initiatives in its whole-life discipleship. Funds will be used to create discipleship curricula, design applications for smart phones and tablets, and publish books on whole-life discipleships.

Missouri State University mathematics professors Les Reid, Jorge Rebaza and Xingping Sun received a $298,255 three-year grant from the National Science Foundation. The funds allow the department to bring nine students from across the U.S. to work with students and faculty on research in the fields of algebra, analysis, combinatorics, differential equations and numerical analysis.

Jeffrey Layman, a senior vice president, portfolio manager and wealth adviser at The Layman Group, was named to Morgan Stanley Smith Barney’s Master’s Club of top financial advisers.

Health Care
Gerry Catapang, president and owner of Physical Therapy Care, Manual Physical Therapy, and Industrial Rehab Center PC, presented a lecture on behalf of the U.S. Workers’ Compensation Claims Prevention Specialists to small-business owners at the Springfield Golf and Country Club. The lecture offered advice on how to increase profits by decreasing workers’ compensation claims.

CoxHealth patient care manager Summer Weter graduated from the Missouri Hospital Association Center for Education’s Health Care Leadership Series. She was among 48 professionals in Missouri who completed the leadership training program.

KTTS-FM received four regional Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association. It was selected for Best Newscast for the May 23, 2011, morning coverage of the EF-5 tornado in Joplin; Continuing Coverage for follow-up reporting of the Joplin tornado; Breaking News Coverage for reporting the murders of Donald and Helen Willingham; and Overall Excellence for the depth and scope of news.

Two Murney Associates Realtors took home honors at a Greater Springfield Board of Realtors awards ceremony. Harry Chalfant was named Realtor Broker of the Year – the board’s highest honor – and Ava Snyder received the 2011 Salesperson of the Year Award.

Lynn Herndon of Vision Clinic attended the Heart of America Contact Lens and Primary Care Congress. The conference covered new and advanced techniques for contact lenses and innovations for enhancing patient vision. Herndon is a 28-year member of the Heart of American Contact Lens Society.
