New Missouri license plates to hit the road in 2019

Missourians have voted.

In January 2019, the current Missouri bluebird license plate will be replaced with a newly designed plate celebrating the 200-year anniversary of the Show-Me State in 2021. The new plate will be unveiled during a ceremony at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Jefferson City.

The plate features red waves at the top and blue waves at the bottom to symbolize Missouri’s flag and rivers. It also will have a faded state seal in the center featuring the words, “Missouri Bicentennial 1821,” a star, and “2021.” All text is featured in navy blue, embossed and printed on a white plate, according to a news release from the office of Rep. Glen Kolkmeyer, R-Odessa.

“The new plates will allow us to show our appreciation for our state’s rich history, and an opportunity to play an important role in promoting our bicentennial celebration,” Kolkmeyer said in the release.

Kolkmeyer’s House Bill 2380 established an advisory committee to develop and approve designs. The committee held public meetings last year in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Poplar Bluff to gather input. A public vote then was held online with a handful of options, according to the release.

The plate design had the greatest readability when tested by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and personalized license plates will be unaffected by the reissue.
