KFC in the works in central Springfield

Kentucky Fried Chicken is bringing its “finger lickin' good” brand to central Springfield.

KFC spokeswoman Kasey Ryan confirmed a franchise restaurant is planned at 215 E. Sunshine St. Ryan, who said the restaurant should open in early 2019, did not provide the name of the franchisee by deadline.

Within sight of Bass Pro Shops’ flagship store, the restaurant is replacing an aging house that’s been used commercially for a law office and psychic reading venue, among other uses.

The estimated project cost is $1.5 million, according to city building permits. Mitch Jenkins, the property owner through Elevation Enterprises LLC, could not be reached for comment by deadline.

Ryan said the restaurant’s design would pay tribute to KFC founder Col. Harland Sanders, with red and white stripes and stylized graphics of his face. Referring to the “American showman design aesthetic,” Ryan said the restaurant would feature photos of Sanders traveling around the world and posing with other celebrities, a chandelier that looks like a KFC bucket of chicken, and a chalkboard showcasing the name of the cook and the U.S. farm that supplied the chicken being cooked that day.

The new KFC would be the company’s fifth restaurant in Springfield, with others in the north, east, south and west parts of the city, according to KFC.com.

Plans for the restaurant were first reported by the Springfield News-Leader.
