MSU finds successor for longtime nursing leader

Posted online

Missouri State University made an out-of-state hire to fill the top School of Nursing spot left vacant by Kathryn Hope, who retired after nearly 20 years with the college.

The School of Nursing is scheduled to host a welcoming reception today for the new director, Steve Stapleton. He officially joined MSU on Jan. 4, coming to Springfield from his position as a tenured associate professor at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois, according to a news release about his hiring recently supplied to Springfield Business Journal.

Stapleton, who has more than 10 years of university experience, also worked as a registered nurse for 28 years in the emergency room, intensive care unit and operation room, as well as in nursing administration at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago.

“My philosophy of leadership and administration is one of service and advocacy. Specifically, I value leadership that prioritizes the interests of students, faculty, staff, alumni and the institution,” Stapleton said in the release. “Collaboration and consensus are important, and I value the collective decisions that best serve our constituents.”

MSU’s School of Nursing offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in nursing, according to the release.

Hope continues to be listed as a per-course faculty member in the School of Nursing on MSU’s website.
