Morrow staying on as chamber CEO amid cancer treatments

Posted online

Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Matt Morrow plans to stay on in his position after being diagnosed with an advanced stage of melanoma cancer, officials say.

Chamber spokeswoman Jennifer McClure this morning confirmed to Springfield Business Journal that Morrow last month informed the board, staff, and friends and colleagues about his health condition.

“He continues to fulfill his responsibilities on a daily basis here, as he follows his treatment plan. We do not anticipate any disruption to his duties as president of the chamber,” McClure said in an emailed statement.

Tapped to succeed Jim Anderson as chamber president in 2014, Morrow yesterday posted about his cancer diagnosis and treatment plan on his personal Facebook page.

In the Facebook post, Morrow said he underwent a procedure on Nov. 28 to remove the melanoma and surrounding tissue, as well as the nearby sentinel lymph node on his left shoulder and neck.

Yesterday, Morrow again went to the hospital, where he received a surgically implanted port through which he’ll receive immunotherapy treatments every two weeks for the next year, according to the Facebook post.

“Good news is the tumor itself appears to have been contained for now. That's God's intervention. In an advanced melanoma tumor this large, it very often already has spread into surrounding tissue and sometimes into the muscle and bone tissue,” he wrote in the post. “The bad news is that there was significant metastatic disease — cancer — presence in that lymph node, which may mean significant presence in the broader lymphatic system. PET and MRI scans about a month ago showed no cancer presence as of yet in outer organs, so that is a praise.

“We are thankful for God's provision of a treatment plan, and are praying that my body will respond well to the treatments and that immunotherapy will work.”
