Modern Society is venturing outside of the Queen City for its second shop.
The clothing retailer is planning a late March or early April opening in Leawood, Kansas, said Brian Pena, who owns Modern Society with his wife Andrea. The plans were first reported by Biz 417.
The husband-and-wife owners on Nov. 26 signed a three-year lease at undisclosed terms for 3,000 square feet at Town Center, an open-air shopping mall anchored by Apple, Crate & Barrel, Macy’s and others.
“I grew up in the area, and I used to shop in the Town Center market,” Pena said. “It’s one of the busiest shopping areas in the Kansas City area.”
Pena said Modern Society is considering future stores in the downtown and midtown Kansas City areas, as well as St. Louis. A third store may open within the next two years, he said.
In Springfield, Modern Society opened downtown in September 2011 before relocating to Brentwood Center in early 2015.
Modern Society sells women’s apparel from such brands as Gentle Fawn and Michael Lauren and men’s clothing from brands including Original Penguin and Ben Sherman. Pena classified the store’s offerings as mid- to high-end.
“That’s the market of Leawood, Kansas,” he said.
