Midwest CPI rises to 219.41

The Midwest Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers rose 0.2 percent to 219.41 in April, compared to 218.96 in March.

The CPI - which shows price changes for energy, food and all other items - is measured in comparison to a base period of 1982-84. A typical market basket of goods and services that cost $100 in 1982-84 cost $219.41 in April. The index is not seasonally adjusted, according to a news release.

The energy index dropped slightly, by 0.2 percent, in April, after rising 6.6 percent in March. During April, motor fuel prices increased 0.8 percent; electricity costs rose 0.2 percent; and prices for utility gas service fell 6 percent, marking its ninth consecutive decrease and its largest drop in two years, according to the release.

The food index increased 0.3 percent in April, reflecting a 0.4 percent increase in prices for food away from home and a 0.2 percent increase in costs for food at home.

The index for all other items rose 0.2 percent in April. Within the index, costs for shelter rose 0.2 percent, apparel, 1.3 percent, and used cars and trucks, 1.6 percent, the release said.

During April, the Midwest tied for the lowest month-to-month CPI increase along with the West. The index for the Northeast region rose 0.3 percent, and prices in the South increased 0.4 percent.

Year-to-date, the April Midwest CPI increased 2.3 percent compared to $214.54 in April 2011. During the year, the energy index dropped 0.4 percent, food prices rose 3.5 percent and all other items increased 2.4 percent, according to the release.
