Mercy partners with Burrell on mental health services

Posted online

Mercy Springfield Communities entered into a partnership with Burrell Behavioral Health Inc. for mental health services.

Through the agreement for undisclosed terms, Burrell psychiatrists and counselors will join Mercy providers to provide behavioral health assessments of emergency room patients. They’ll also work at Mercy’s Marian Center, 1845 S. Rogers Ave., which serves as the health care system’s inpatient behavioral health unit in Springfield, according to a news release.

“We have a nationwide shortage of mental health providers,” said Jon Swope, president of Mercy Springfield Communities, in the release. “That’s why linking arms as a community to share resources is the best way to help our neighbors. I know adding Burrell’s expertise will make a big difference to our patients.”

The Burrell service at the Marian Center starts Dec. 1.

Mercy came under fire last year over allegations of patient abuse in the health care system’s emergency and psychiatric departments between April and August 2017. The allegations put Mercy Hospital Springfield at risk of losing its Medicare agreement, though the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ultimately decided to let the health care system keep the status after determining it sufficiently corrected its “condition-level deficiencies,” according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

CoxHealth also partners with Burrell on mental health services, such as counseling and substance abuse treatment, according to the former’s website.

Mercy’s partnership comes after Ozarks Community Hospital sold its former 2828 N. National Ave. campus to Perimeter Springfield Realty LLC. The 32-bed freestanding psychiatric hospital is now operating as Springfield Behavioral Hospital.
