Leadership is Learning

Today’s leaders are responsible for creating future leaders. Each new generation of leaders has different experiences to draw from and various leadership styles they have encountered. The following are a few leadership fundamentals that I have picked up from mentors and through my experiences.

1. Never stop learning. You are constantly learning from your own experience and those of others, and through personal and professional development. It is important to grow as a leader from these experiences.

2. Have a vision or goal. Write it down, share it, and update it as necessary. You won’t get there if you don’t know where you are headed.

3. Care about your team, customers and company. Give credit where it is due and help others.

4. Don’t ask something of others you are not willing to do yourself.

5. Be involved and empower others to be involved.

6. Work hard and have fun and want that for others.

7. Take advantage of any personal or professional opportunities to learn, give, and grow. Do so by observing and listening to other successful leaders you admire, then create your own style.

8. Step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. If it doesn’t have the results you want, learn from the experience and move on.

A wealth of online and social media resources is also available at our fingertips to address challenges, seek guidance and observe other leaders.
