Legacy Bagelry & Bakery LLC could have ceased doing business this month when it’s required to leave its home on South Fremont Avenue. Instead, the company soon will begin wholesale operations at MJ’s Market and Deli.
Legacy Bagelry, which started as The Mighty Bagel food cart downtown in August 2012, moved into 1,600 square feet at 3049 S. Fremont Ave.
a year later. The building was purchased along with the nearby Heritage Cafeteria by Oak Grove, Illinois-based InSite Real Estate in October. Legacy Bagelry owners Kyle and Bethany Gerecke say they were then told to move out by early 2017, and the retail store closed at that time. Wholesale operations continued, according to a news release.
On Jan. 10, near the deadline to vacate, Legacy Bagelry informed its employees and clients the business would close because they could not find a suitable home. They even checked other markets outside of Springfield.
That’s where MaMa Jean’s Natural Foods Market’s MJ’s Market and Deli came in.
The Gereckes, who could not be reached for comment by deadline, said in the release they’ll move into space at MJ’s on Jan. 30. MJ’s
opened in July 2016 at 900 E. Battlefield Road, Ste. 140, in the Battlefield Marketplace.
“This collaboration truly demonstrates MaMa Jean's dedication to supporting local,” they said in the release.
During its over three years on South Fremont, Legacy Bagelry produced some 3 million bagels for such clients as Hotel Vandivort, Mercy Hospital Springfield and CoxHealth. The release did not indicate plans for new retail operations at MJ’s, but noted Legacy products would continue to be sold at MaMa Jean’s stores.
