Hudson Hawk rolls out new shop plans

Posted online

Hudson Hawk Barber & Shop is in growth mode with plans inside and outside of the Queen City.

The Springfield-based old-school barbershop chain of five locations is working to open new stores in south Springfield, Columbia and Prairie Village, Kansas, as well as replacing its current shop on East Sunshine Street, said co-owner Thad Forrester.

“Our brand was born here in the Midwest, and it’s an area where we want to see ourselves grow and thrive,” said Forrester, who owns Hudson Hawk with Paul Catlett of Studio 417 Salon.

The two new Springfield shops will be located in the Southern Hills Shopping Center and the south-side Magers Crossing development that’s underway. Both are expected to open in spring 2018.

At Southern Hills, 2932 E. Sunshine St., owner The Wooten Co. is developing a stand-alone building for Hudson Hawk that will replace the chain’s store inside the same parking lot. At 1,400 square feet, Forrester said the new shop would be more than twice as big as its current location, which will remain open until the transition. The company signed a 10-year lease for undisclosed terms with Wooten Co., he said.

At Magers Crossing, Hudson Hawk signed a lease last month to occupy the northwest corner of the development’s building facing Republic Road. Forrester said the owners have been targeting southwest Springfield to expand the brand.

“As it extends out in that direction, there’s a lot of rooftops, a lot of growth and development happening,” he said.

In December, Hudson Hawk plans to open its new stores in Columbia and the Kansas City metropolitan area city of Prairie Village. The company already operates a shop in Kansas City, opening its first outside the Springfield area a year ago.

“Columbia has been an area we’ve been very interested in,” Forrester added. “It’s a great college town.”

Following the expansion, Hudson Hawk would operate eight stores. The company expects to create 41 full-time and 20 part-time jobs with its plans.
