As winter thaws, Springfield hotels are heating up this spring as lodging owners prepare for tens of thousands of guests to enter the city for events.
The Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau forecasts that 23 events, starting this month through June, will generate 25,324 room nights at area hotels, the organization announced in its monthly newsletter.
The largest event, the March 7-9 and March 14-16 Missouri State High School Activities Association State Basketball Championships, is slated to create 6,500 room night rentals and bring some 40,000 attendees to the city.
Attendance figures for the events combined total 84,690 people, according to the CVB.
Other large events this spring, by event start date, include:
• the Greater Ozarks Open Bowling Tournament, 11,000 attendees, 1,700 room nights, Feb. 8-June 9;
• National Christian HomeSchool Championships Basketball Nationals, 10,000 attendees, 6,123 room nights, March 9-16;
• Missouri FBLA – Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference, 5,800 attendees, 2,746 room nights, April 14-16;
• Lake Country Soccer Ozarks Coca-Cola Dr Pepper Cup, 5,000 attendees, 1,200 room nights, April 26-28; and
• The World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championships, 1,800 attendees, 2,245 room nights, April 30-May 4.
