Missouri House of Representatives leaders selected Rep. Elijah Haahr, R-Springfield, as the body’s next speaker.
Haahr, an of counsel attorney for Lathrop Gage LLP, will be the first Springfielidan in state history to hold the speaker role. He’ll succeed Rep. Todd Richardson, R-Poplar Bluff, in 2019, after he terms out next year. Haahr will keep his current title of speaker pro tem through the 2018 session, according to a news release.
“I want to thank the members of my caucus for their support and their faith in my ability to lead them in the years to come,” Haahr said in the release. “We have accomplished great things together under the leadership of Speaker Richardson, and I hope to build on these successes by working together as a caucus to make our great state even greater.”
Haahr was first elected as the 134th District representative covering Greene County in 2012.
As speaker pro tem, Haahr serves as an ex-officio member of all House committees. During the 2018 session, he sponsored two bills and co-sponsored two others. His sponsored bills — establishing guidelines for the regulation of occupations and professions not regulated by the Division of Professional Registration and extending the sunset provisions for fees credited to the technology trust fund — stalled during the session.
Utah-based gourmet cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opened its first Springfield shop; interior design business Branson Upstaging LLC relocated; and Lauren Ashley Dance Center LLC added a second location.
