Goodwill replacement store nears opening

Mers Goodwill is nearing completion of a $2.8 million transition on the south side.

The St. Louis nonprofit’s 15,575-square-foot store at 3151 S. Kansas Expressway is scheduled to open Oct. 6. It replaces an aging, existing store at 520 E. Battlefield Road.

“Expanding Mers Goodwill’s footprint in Springfield was a priority for us this year in order to better serve our customers and meet the needs of the local community,” President and CEO David Kutchback said in a news release.

At the Kansas Expressway store, Goodwill seeks two new hires to add to the 20 employees moving over from Battlefield Road.

On May 5, Goodwill opened its newest Springfield store at 425 S. Western Ave. The $2.4 million, nearly 15,000-square-foot store was followed by Goodwill’s relocation of its career center near Hammons Field in June, according to the release.

“Now with two new retail stores, donations in Springfield are expected to more than double,” Kutchback added. “The revenue we generate from selling those donations will be reinvested back into the community through employment and rehabilitation programs at the recently relocated career center.”

Columbia-based Coil Construction Inc. and Jefferson City designer Rimiller Architects LLC worked on both of Goodwill’s new Springfield stores.
