The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools awarded $276,869 in back-to-school grants to teachers, librarians and principals in the district.

The foundation yesterday delivered nearly 80 checks after 10 library Reading Roundup grants were issued on Aug. 24, according to a news release.

The funds donated by businesses and community members for the grant cycle exceeded the goal by nearly $27,000. It also beat last year’s total of $247,370.

“This year, grants were awarded in the categories of student experience, modern learning environment, classroom projects, community engagement, professional development and Reading Roundup,” foundation President-elect Marc Mayer said in the release. “Through each of the six categories, teachers and librarians were rewarded for their efforts to support their students’ academic achievements.

“Each of those individuals go above and beyond the call of duty to seek additional funding for their projects and we applaud their efforts.”
