First Springfield Neighborhood Market opens next week

Posted online
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is planning a May 16 opening of its first Neighborhood Market in Springfield at 3150 W. Republic Road.

The roughly $1.7 million, 41,000-square-foot store will employ 80, with Springfield native Jamie Dahmer serving as store manager. Dahmer joined Wal-Mart in 1996 working as a cashier at a store in Ava, according to a news release.

Walmart Neighborhood Markets are designed to offer quicker shopping for customers in smaller locations, unlike Walmart Supercenters, which typically employ about 350 in an average 185,000 square feet. Neighborhood Markets sell groceries, pharmaceuticals and general merchandise such as household and pet supplies. The company's Express stores, which are in the testing phase, are the smallest in its repertoire at an average of 15,000 square feet, according to the company's Web site.

A second, roughly $1.6 million Neighborhood Market is scheduled to open May 25 at 1320 S. Glenstone Ave.

“I wish to welcome the two new Walmart Neighborhood Market stores to Springfield. Both stores will provide another option for the nearby neighborhoods at a time when the cost of driving has risen dramatically," Springfield City Councilman Jerry Compton said in the release. The West Republic Road location falls within Zone 3, which Compton represents.

Two other Springfield Neighborhood Market stores are planned to open this year at the southwest corner of West Bypass Road and West Mount Vernon Street and south of James River Freeway at Campbell Avenue in the James River Commons development, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.[[In-content Ad]]
