First big depression advance since Prozac nears FDA approval

A drug that's said to be the biggest advance in treating depression since the introduction of Prozac in 1987 is nearing approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Johnson & Johnson’s esketamine, a close chemical cousin of the anesthetic ketamine, on Thursday was recommended by a panel of outside experts.

The fast-acting antidepressant is administered through a nasal spray.
