The co-owners of Civil Kitchen are cooking up a new downtown establishment.

Finnegan’s Wake co-owner Anne Baker owns Civil Kitchen with her husband Clayton and their business partner Tommy Hong. The trio are teaming with Jessica Oliva to open Tinga Tacos at 308 W. McDaniel St.

Anne Baker said she had been eying the 1,175-square-foot space but missed out on the opportunity to lease it after former tenant Amycakes LLC moved to 1108 E. Walnut St. The Brick Slice House LLC took over the space for less than two years before suddenly closing in March.

“I’ve always said it’s a really cool location,” Baker said, noting when it became available again, building owner Jason Murray offered the space to her.

Through Duberry LLC, the Bakers, Hong and Oliva signed a three-year lease, with options, for undisclosed terms.

Now, the team is renovating the exterior and interior ahead an Oct. 1 planned opening.

“We hoped it would be turnkey. It was not,” Baker said, declining to disclose how much the business partners are investing in the project. “That’s something we are doing on our own, which is kind of the hold up right now.”

Tinga Tacos’ menu plans to have a variety of quick-serve dishes, including chicken and steak tacos, classic tacos with different sauces and salsas, and specials, such as cashew chicken tacos. Baker said the restaurant is not inspired by any certain region, so the tacos will span from southwest style to Asian.

“It’s pretty eclectic, I would say,” she said. “We are trying to appeal to every type of foodie.”

Baker said the restaurant would employ 12-15 under the leadership of Oliva, a high school friend of Baker’s with experience as a restaurant general manager, including work at McAlister's Deli and San Francisco Oven.
