FCC to expand programming for visually impaired

The Federal Communications Commission is requiring broadcasters and pay-TV providers to add more programming for the visually impaired.

Starting in July 2018, providers must offer 87.5 hours of described programming per calendar quarter. The programming would allow people with limited vision to hear a depiction of on-screen action along with the show's dialogue.

The switch is a 75 percent increase over current requirements.
